Position Paper: Bottom Feeders
“America runs on Dunkin”…and cheap labor
Conservatives focus on protecting the top because its proponents believe that every American wants to and can make it to the top. Liberals share the view that it is those on the bottom and in the middle who make it possible for the top to attain a disproportionately high wealth and that the proportion of workers from the bottom and middle who make it to the top is inappropriately low.
Conservatives argue that there are enough slices because the pie grows larger. Liberals contend that as the pie grows the top prepare an exponentially larger plate. That said, one of the points in which a substantial number of liberals agree with conservative economic theory is the belief that the pie does in fact get larger. The corresponding point of disagreement is whether the rules governing how each citizen can work to increase their respective piece are fair to all participants.At its inception, the American economy was propelled by free labor. As brilliant and prophetic as The Founders were, our governing documents only deserve half the credit for America’s economic success and social stability. The other half must be granted to the country’s indentured servants who were and remain an incredibly productive labor force.
Though we enjoy the rights and liberties granted by the rule of law, citizens face a glaring inequality in justice, knowledge and opportunity. The Koch brothers increased their wealth by $9 Billion last year. I do not know the exact math but its reasonable to believe that on average the people they employ did not see a proportional increase in wealth. It is under-compensated labor provided by the bottom and the middle that empower the Koch’s to accrue so much more money than what their employees attain (combined).
What is the point of saying all that? Bottom line, party ideology aside, we all want to get paid. The issue is making the game fair for everyone; what is the point of playing if it is automatically a blowout. Winning the future requires that the rules of American capitalism enable all citizens to be victorious if they apply themselves, have a bit of luck and grease the right wheels. As it stands, such is not the case. Not by a long shot. #punswild
